TBTB – Colleen McCullough’s The Thorn Birds

The Thorn Birds

The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough | Goodreads

Learning of author Colleen McCullough’s death today made me recall her book The Thorn Birds. The miniseries based on her novel of the lovely Meggie Cleary’s doomed love of parish priest, Ralph de Bricassart, inspired me to read the book.

TBTB – Ann Rinaldi’s A Break With Charity

A Break with Charity: A Story about the Salem Witch Trials | Goodreads

While I probably read historical fiction in the past, my earliest memory of enjoying this subgenre was Ann Rinaldi’s A Break with Charity… I found myself walking in Salem Village right along with Susanna English. After reading this book, I tried to find as many books by Rinaldi as possible. Of course, I discovered other wonderful historical fiction authors but Rinaldi remains the one who introduced me novels about the past.

TBTB – Clifford the Big Red Dog

The original, 1963 cover of Clifford the Big Red Dog. “[I] was shocked when it was accepted for publication, because I’d never written anything before,” says Norman Bridwell. Scholastic

One of my all-time favorite reads was of this friendly, red dog. Later on, Clifford made his way onto small-screen edutainment station PBS. I hope late author Norman Bridwell’s legacy touches the lives of future generations.

TBTB – Sweet Valley Saga

Sweet Valley Saga | Snark Valley

One of my girlhood guiltiest pleasures was Sweet Valley High, created by Francine Pascal. Pascal’s Sweet Valley Confidential holds the dubious distinction of receiving the lowest book rating ever. Nonetheless, my favorites in the series were the sagas – genealogies of the fictional stars. The first book traces the maternal line of the Wakefield twins, Elizabeth and Jessica. While I found some of it contrived (yes, even in girlhood, I thought it was contrived), I liked the idea of family story, their genealogy. I believe I went on to read the second book, which followed the story of Ned Wakefield’s , the twins’ father, side of the family tree. For a more detailed description, visit Snark Valley’s review of this book by clicking here.
